Learn The Guitar Step One Step One: How To Hold The Guitar

Before you start actually playing the guitar it is important that you know how to properly hold the guitar. There are a couple of common mistakes that beginner guitar players make when holding the guitar. In this beginner guitar lesson you will learn how to hold the guitar as well as a couple of things to avoid when holding the guitar.

When you sit down to play you basically have two choices when it comes to how to hold the guitar. You can rest the guitar on your right leg or your left leg. The right leg is the more common choice. I am assuming you are right handed. If you are left handed flip flop this example.

Let’s say that you chose to sit with the guitar over your right leg. There are a few things that you will want to make sure that you are doing and a few things that you will want make sure you are avoiding.

First of all, check your posture and make sure that you are not slouching too much. You should be comfortable when you play but you don’t want to develop the bad habit of poor posture.

Make sure that you are holding the guitar close to your body with you right arm. Don’t let the guitar slide down your leg. Many beginner guitar players do this because the feel that they need to see what their right hand is doing.  Try to keep that guitar upright and close to your body. Don’t let it slide down your leg. You might need a guitar strap to help you keep the guitar from sliding.

The last thing that you need to remember when holding the guitar is to relax. If you ever feel any excess tension in your back, shoulders, arms or hands take a minute, stop, relax and grab the guitar again. Don’t tense up, relax and breathe!
